Terrace1917 is located in Helsinki, Suomenlinna, right next to the Kustaanmiekka strait, just an 80-meter walk from the King’s Gate. The easiest and best way to reach us is by ferry, which operates from May to September from the Market Square via Tykistönlahti and Lonna to the King’s Gate. 

The ferry journey to King’s Gate takes about 30 minutes. You can find schedules and more information here

You can also travel from Helsinki Market Square to the main pier of Suomenlinna by the HSL ferry. The ferry ride takes about 15 minutes. From the main pier in Suomenlinna, it is approximately a 1.5 km walk to the restaurant terrace. You can find the HSL ferry schedules here.

OUR STORY​

Rich History

The War of Independence had ended and the occupying forces had been driven out. The dream of an independent nation had finally become reality. The spirit of celebration, along with the characteristic Finnish determination, is reflected in the greeting delivered by the Chairman of the Senate, Pehr Evind Svinhufvud, at the flag-raising ceremony. Below is the quote in full:

“Now Finland is free. Now the Finnish flag flies at the top of this old fortress. To commemorate this, the Senate has decided that the Viapori fortress shall from now on be called Suomenlinna. May no enemy ever be able to pull down this flag, but may it always fly here.”

The duty set by Svinhufvud has been fulfilled. The symbol of our freedom — the Finnish flag — has flown here in Suomenlinna for over a hundred years. Yet freedom has not been preserved without effort. It requires dedication and the long-term work needed to safeguard and defend it. That is our responsibility to future generations.

The terrace last served customers in 2019, after which the premises were completely renovated with respect for the historic surroundings. The new entrepreneurs, Tony and Staffan, warmly welcome everyone to enjoy a drink while taking in the unique views. You can start your evening celebration here and continue it at Restaurant Walhalla.
